What does AC repair include?

AC repair by unit type

We handle every AC type common in Riyadh, and each has its characteristic faults. The split AC is the most widespread, and its dominant faults are gas leaks at the copper joints, a blocked drain line, and a failed run capacitor. The window AC is simpler in construction but more prone to fan wear and a clogged rear drain hole. A central AC adds complexity in the ducts, control board and thermostat. A concealed unit sometimes needs gypsum panels removed and has an electric drain pump that can fail silently, so the leak shows up late as a ceiling stain. An evaporative desert cooler has no refrigerant and no compressor; its faults centre on the pump, the pads and the water-level sensor.

How we diagnose the fault precisely

Diagnosis is what separates a repair that lasts from one that returns in a week. We start by measuring the temperature difference between intake and outlet air: a healthy AC gives 8 to 12°C, and below 5°C means a confirmed fault in the cooling cycle. Then we measure gas pressure on both the suction and discharge sides to tell whether the loss is partial or total, and measure the compressor's current draw against the rating plate to catch electrical weakness before it becomes failure. We inspect the capacitor visually and by measurement, and check that terminals are tight with no blackening indicating overheating. Finally we check the drain line, the slope and coil cleanliness. This order prevents the common error of adding gas to an AC whose real problem is a dirty coil or a weak fan.

The most common AC faults in Riyadh

Riyadh's climate produces a clear pattern of faults we see every season. Dust tops the list: it clogs the filters and coats the condenser fins on the outdoor unit so it can't reject heat, which raises pressure and compressor temperature and over time causes repeated thermal cut-outs. Next is freon leaking at the copper joints from constant expansion and contraction with the large day-night temperature swings. Then run-capacitor failure after years of high heat — a very common cause of an AC that blows air with no cooling. Then a drain line blocked by dust and algae. And finally installation errors: a copper line longer than needed without an extra charge, or an outdoor unit placed in a narrow light-well where it re-ingests its own hot air.

When repair beats replacement

The practical rule we apply honestly: if the repair exceeds 40% of the price of a comparable new unit and your appliance is over eight years old, replacement is financially wiser — and we'll say so plainly even if it costs us the job. But if the fault is one specific part such as the capacitor, the fan or the control board, and the unit is otherwise sound, repair is clearly better value. There's a third factor many overlook: energy efficiency. Older ACs draw far more power than modern models, so if yours runs long hours daily, the bill difference can offset part of a new unit's price within two seasons.
