Why won't the AC cool even when running?

The most common cause is low freon from a leak that must be fixed before refilling. Next are dirty filters and coil that block airflow, then a weak compressor or a capacitor fault. We start by measuring gas pressure and inspecting the coil and compressor to choose the right fix and avoid a repeat.

No cooling at all versus weak cooling

The first question we ask before a visit, because the answer completely changes the suspect list. If the air is cold but insufficient to cool the room, the cycle is working and the issue is its efficiency: clogged filters, a dirty coil, partial gas loss, damaged insulation on the copper line, or an AC undersized for the room. But if there's no cold at all and the outgoing air is at room temperature, the cycle has stopped: total gas loss, a compressor not running, or the AC simply set to fan mode. A two-minute test you can run: set maximum cooling for ten minutes, then compare air temperature at the outlet and the intake. The normal difference is 8 to 12°C; under 5 means a confirmed fault, and near zero means the compressor isn't running.

Causes specific to split ACs

The split AC is the most widespread in Riyadh homes and has three weak points of its own. First, the length of the copper line between the units: the longer it is or the greater the height difference, the more efficiency is lost — and if the line was run longer than necessary without an appropriate extra gas charge, the AC cools weakly from day one even though it's new and sound. Second, the line's insulation: black insulation degraded by Riyadh's sun lets the refrigerant warm before reaching the indoor unit, noticeably weakening cooling — a cheap fix that's often neglected. Third, the outdoor unit's position: many flats place it in a narrow light-well or behind a barrier, so it re-ingests its own hot air and cannot reject heat at all, however sound it is.

A new AC that won't cool — entirely different causes

If your AC is new or recently installed and won't cool, immediately rule out age and dirt related causes. The suspects here are different and almost all are installation errors: failing to vacuum air and moisture from the copper lines before releasing the gas — the single most common error, which permanently weakens cooling because moisture inside the circuit freezes and blocks the capillary tube. Or not fully opening the outdoor unit's valves after installation. Or a leak from a joint not torqued correctly. Or choosing a capacity below the room's need. The good news is these are all fixable, and more importantly you're probably still within the installation or dealer warranty — claim it before paying anyone else.

What we check on a weak-cooling visit

We follow a fixed order that prevents the common error of adding gas to an AC whose problem lies elsewhere. We start with the obvious: remote mode, temperature setting and fan speed — many cases are resolved here for free. Then we check the filters and indoor coil for dust or ice. Then we go to the outdoor unit and check the condenser fins' cleanliness and the ventilation clearance around it. After that we measure the intake-to-outlet temperature difference for an objective number. Then we measure gas pressure on both the suction and discharge sides to determine whether the loss is partial or total. Finally we measure the compressor's current draw and test the capacitor.
