The washer won't spin or turn
The most common automatic washer complaint we get, with a ladder of causes from simplest to most complex. First, an unbalanced load: modern washers stop spinning automatically to protect themselves if clothes bunch on one side or a single heavy item such as a blanket is washed alone. Redistribute the load and try again — this resolves many cases for free. Second, a blocked drain filter or pump, since most washers won't start spinning until the water has fully drained, and the drain filter is usually cleanable yourself behind a small cover at the bottom. Third, the door lock and its sensor: the washer won't spin unless it senses the door firmly closed. Fourth, a worn drive belt, whose sign is hearing the motor run while the drum doesn't turn. Fifth, the control board.
Error codes and what they mean
The digital display on automatic washers isn't just an annoyance — it's a free diagnostic tool if you know how to read it. Codes differ between brands but their categories are similar: water-inlet codes mean low pressure, a closed tap or a blocked inlet filter, and are usually the simplest to resolve yourself. Drain codes point to a blocked filter or pump or a kinked hose. Door codes mean a failed lock or sensor. Balance codes mean an unevenly distributed load.
