Why isn't the dishwasher cleaning well?

The dishwasher won't drain
Dishwasher, dish washer and washing-up machine are names for one appliance, and this is its most common fault. Always start with the bottom filter: at the base is a circular filter that stops food debris reaching the pump, and with use it fills with grease and food bits and blocks drainage. Remove the bottom rack, turn the filter anticlockwise to unlock it, wash it with warm water and a brush, then refit. This step alone resolves most cases free in five minutes. If it persists, the next suspect is the drain hose: make sure it isn't kinked behind the machine and that its connection to the kitchen drain isn't blocked with grease. Then the drain pump, where a small piece of glass or a bone can lodge. And finally an electrical fault in the pump or control board, which needs a technician.
Dishes come out dirty or with white residue
Two different problems people often confuse. Dishes coming out dirty is usually caused by blocked holes in the rotating spray arm, loading dishes so they shadow each other from the spray, or weak water heating. White residue on glasses and dishes is an entirely different issue and very common in Riyadh specifically because of hard water: dissolved salts deposit as the water dries. The fix isn't a repair but a setting: regularly fill the dedicated salt reservoir in the dishwasher — a separate compartment from the detergent that many overlook — use a detergent suited to hard water, and set the salt level per your machine's manual.
