Why does an AC drip water indoors?

The most common causes: a drain hose blocked by dust and algae, a full or wrongly sloped tray, low freon that freezes the coil then thaws and overflows, or a unit installed at the wrong slope. We pinpoint the cause and fix it at the root instead of temporary patches.

Is it dangerous to run the AC while it's dripping?

Yes, and it's the most common question we get. Water leaking inside the indoor unit passes centimetres from the electronic control board and electrical terminals, and any contact can cause a short that burns the board or trips your breaker. The second risk is slower but certain: a wall that gets wet daily grows mold within one to two weeks in Riyadh's climate, and the plaster and paint absorb it and swell. The safe rule: switch the AC off at the isolator, dry the area, and don't run it again until the cause is fixed. If you must run it for one night before we arrive, use fan mode instead of cooling — the fan alone doesn't chill the coil, so no condensation occurs and no water forms at all.

The eight causes of AC dripping

A drain line blocked by dust and algae is the first cause and responsible for most cases; its sign is that dripping increases the longer the unit runs. Next is a wrong installation slope: the indoor unit must be mounted with a slight tilt toward the drain side, and if fitted perfectly level or with a reverse slope, water pools and leaks from the edge. Third is low freon freezing the coil, so the ice melts all at once in a volume exceeding the tray's capacity. Fourth is a full or cracked collection tray. Fifth is damaged thermal insulation on the copper pipes, which then sweat like a chilled bottle. Sixth is a blocked rear drain hole on a window AC. Seventh is a failed drain pump on a concealed unit. And eighth is a very low temperature setting combined with weak fan speed, producing more condensation than the drain can carry.

What we do on a leak repair visit

We start by pinpointing the water source before any work, because the fix differs entirely by cause: a leak from the unit's edge points to the slope or tray, a leak with ice on the pipes points to gas, and droplets along the copper line point to insulation. After diagnosis we clear the drain line with pressure or specialist suction — never metal wires that can puncture the hose — then sanitize it with a product that prevents algae regrowth, and verify its outlet outside isn't blocked or submerged in standing water. If the slope is the cause, we remount the unit at the correct angle. If the insulation has failed, we re-insulate the full line. We end the visit by running the AC for half an hour in front of you to confirm water exits the correct outlet and the leak has genuinely stopped.

Outdoor unit dripping — normal or not?

A big confusion arises here. Water exiting the outdoor unit in cooling mode is completely normal — that's the correct outlet for condensate from inside. In fact, water stopping while the AC runs at full power is the worrying sign, because it means water is trapped somewhere inside, possibly collecting within the wall through a punctured hose. So when is it abnormal? In two cases: if water comes from the unit's body rather than the bottom drain opening, usually condensation on pipes that lost their insulation. Or if the liquid is oily, coloured or has a smell — that's compressor oil escaping with a gas leak and calls for switching off immediately. In heating mode in winter, heavy water is also normal because the defrost cycle is running.
