Cooker won't ignite: causes
Usually a dirty igniter, blocked burner ports, a weak ignition battery, or a gas valve fault. We clean and inspect the components and verify safe gas connection before handover. Do not DIY gas issues due to their hazard.
The oven won't heat — by oven type
Diagnosis differs fundamentally between electric and gas ovens. In an electric oven the first suspect is the heating element itself: inspect it visually while cold and disconnected, and if you see swelling, cracking or a burnt spot it has failed and needs replacing. The second suspect is the thermostat, which loses accuracy over time so the oven heats below or above the set temperature. The third is the timer or control board. In a gas oven the path is different: the most common cause is the thermal safety valve that cuts the gas if it senses no flame, followed by the igniter or ignition system, then burner ports blocked with grease. In a gas oven, never attempt diagnosis yourself — any gas leak is a genuine risk to the home.
Gas work: safety first
We treat gas work as a safety matter before it is a repair matter, and apply fixed procedures on every visit. We shut off the gas supply before any work, check every joint, the cylinder regulator and the hose for leaks using a bubble solution and never a flame, and verify the thermal safety valve before restarting. We end every visit with a full leak check and an ignition test in front of you. Signs that call for switching the appliance off immediately, closing the gas supply and calling us before any use: a gas smell, a yellow or orange flame instead of blue, black soot on pots, the flame going out by itself, or a hissing sound near the joints. Never attempt to fix a gas leak yourself and never use tape as a temporary measure.
The cooker ignition won't work
If no spark appears at any burner, the problem is usually the spark generator or the electrical connection — first check the plug is connected, as many cookers need power for ignition only. If the spark appears at some burners but not others, the issue is local to that burner's igniter: usually dirty with grease or wet after cleaning, and cleaning it with a dry brush may solve it. But if the spark appears and the flame lights then goes out the moment you release the knob, that is an entirely different symptom pointing to the thermal safety valve not sensing the flame and cutting the gas — this is not a fault to bypass but a protection system preventing a gas leak, and it needs the part replaced rather than disabled.
