Freezer cold but fridge warm: why?

This common fault is usually a faulty evaporator fan that moves cold from freezer to fridge, ice blocking the air path, or a defrost timer fault. We inspect the fan and defrost system and restore correct cold distribution.

When the barrad won't cool — the same fault, Gulf term

Every day we get calls saying the barrad won't cool, and others saying the fridge won't cool. The word differs between Riyadh, the Gulf and the Levant, but the appliance is the same, the fault is the same and the fixes are identical. The realistic ranking of why a fridge stops cooling, as we see it in Riyadh homes: first, dust build-up on the condenser coil behind the unit — very common here because of sandstorms, and it stops the fridge rejecting heat. Then a failed internal distribution fan. Then a defrost system fault. Then worn door gaskets. Then low freon. And finally the start relay or compressor. Note that the first four causes — the overwhelming majority — are simple and inexpensive to fix.

The freezer is cold but the fridge is warm

This is the most common fridge complaint we receive, and it has a clear explanation. In most no-frost fridges there is only one evaporator, inside the freezer, and a small fan pushes cold air from it into the fridge compartment through a duct. If that fan stops or weakens, or accumulated ice blocks the air duct between the two sections, the cold stays trapped in the freezer and the fridge stays warm — while the compressor and gas are perfectly fine. A practical test before calling us: open the fridge door and hold your hand in front of the upper air vents. If you feel a clear cold draught, the fan works and the issue is the amount of cold itself. If you feel nothing, the problem is the fan or a blocked duct. This one detail cuts half the visit time.

Defrost system faults

Every modern fridge has an automatic defrost system that runs several times a day silently: cooling pauses for minutes, a small element behind the freezer's inner panel warms to melt ice built up on the evaporator, and the water drains through a tube into a tray above the compressor to evaporate. When this cycle fails, ice keeps accumulating until it forms a wall that fully insulates the evaporator, and cooling stops even though the compressor runs and the gas is fine. The system has three parts, any of which may have failed: the defrost heater, most commonly, the timer that decides when the cycle starts, or the thermal sensor. A telltale confirmation: if you switch the fridge off for 8 to 12 hours until the ice melts, then run it and it cools excellently for several days before gradually worsening, that confirms the defrost system is at fault.

The fridge motor won't start, or runs without cooling

Two entirely different complaints despite sounding alike, and easy to tell apart by listening behind the unit. No sound at all while the interior light works: the compressor isn't starting, and the most common cause is the start relay or start capacitor — a relatively cheap small part, not the compressor as many assume. A short hum then a stop, repeating every few minutes: the compressor tries to start and fails, same suspects. The compressor runs with a normal continuous sound but there's no cold: the cycle runs but has nothing to pump, meaning low or no gas from a leak, or a blocked capillary tube. The compressor runs non-stop and never cuts off: the fridge never reaches the target temperature, usually partial gas loss, a worn gasket, or a dust-covered condenser coil. Don't accept a dead-compressor diagnosis before the relay and capacitor are tested in front of you with a meter.

When a fridge is worth repairing and when to replace

The rule we honestly recommend: if the repair exceeds 40% of the price of a comparable new fridge and your appliance is over ten years old, replacement is wiser — and we'll say so plainly even if it costs us the job. In practice that means gasket, fan, relay and defrost faults are almost always worth repairing regardless of age, because they cost a small fraction of a new fridge. A gas leak repair is worth it if the fridge is under eight years old. Replacing the compressor in a very old fridge usually isn't worth it, especially since modern models are far more efficient and can offset the difference within two to three years.
